Hi, I’m Darby!

Hi, I’m Darbey Hargrove, a Licensed Professional Counselor. I earned my undergraduate degree in Communication from the University of Oklahoma and my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University. I have spent the past eight years living and working in Oklahoma and have recently moved back home to Houston. Being born and raised in Houston, it holds a special place in my heart, and I truly value being close to my family again and rooted in the community I grew up in.

During my time at the University of Oklahoma, I also played collegiate soccer, an experience that played a meaningful role in shaping my passion for mental health. As a student-athlete, I experienced firsthand the pressures of balancing academics, athletics, and personal expectations, and I often wished I had more support navigating challenges such as performance anxiety, emotional regulation, confidence, and the demands of daily life. That experience ultimately inspired my path into the counseling field, and I now carry that perspective into my work, especially when supporting young athletes in strengthening both their mindset and performance while also developing healthy communication skills with coaches and teammates.

Outside of work, I enjoy watching sports, playing golf, and working out. I also love spending time traveling and making memories with friends and family, as well as spending time with my dog Ziggy.

In addition to athletes, I enjoy working with children, teens, and adults as they navigate identity, relationships, and life transitions. I help clients work through concerns such as anxiety, anger, grief, self-esteem, and boundaries, and I support individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. My goal is to empower clients to develop a stronger sense of self and feel confident in their ability to handle whatever life brings their way.

I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which allows me to help clients process and heal from past trauma. Through this work, I support clients in identifying and reshaping negative core beliefs into more adaptive and empowering ones.

My experience also includes working with couples using the Gottman Method, where I help partners improve communication, navigate conflict, and increase intimacy while deepening their connection. I value helping couples better understand each other’s experiences and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to working with children and families. During graduate school, I worked as a nanny for over three years, and I also volunteered with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and other nonprofit organizations supporting adolescents. These experiences strengthened my passion for building meaningful connections with young people and supporting their emotional growth and development.

My approach to therapy is warm, relational, and authentic. I integrate evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), family systems, attachment theory, and person-centered therapy to meet each client’s unique needs. I view each individual within the context of their relationships and experiences and tailor sessions to support meaningful and lasting change.

I believe that impactful growth happens when you feel safe enough to be your true self, so I strive to create an environment where you feel comfortable, supported, and genuinely understood. I value incorporating humor, honesty, and real connection into the therapeutic process. I consider it a privilege to walk alongside you or your child as you navigate the ups and downs of life.
