Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be Overwhelming.
Are you wondering if unresolved trauma prevents you from achieving a fulfilling life?
Has your life started feeling small and rigid because you must stick to your routine to feel stable?
Maybe you are avoiding anything that could bring back a traumatic memory or trigger feelings of trauma.
When you’ve been through a traumatic experience, you try to move on quickly. However, sometimes the experience is so overwhelming that it seems to hold you back even months or years later. You find yourself always preparing for the worst. And your overwhelming feelings are with you all the time. These feelings may even make sleeping and getting through day-to-day tasks unmanageable. Or, maybe you experience quite the opposite, and the feeling of numbness is holding you back from experiencing pleasure in your life.
You wonder what it would be like trust others and have more flexibility in life. Perhaps, you feel disconnected from yourself and others as though you are just watching life go by. Sadly, you do want to connect with people, but you feel too afraid to get close. Have your relationships suffered because you are on edge all the time and can’t control your temper? Understandably, you probably feel safer simply being alone and depending solely on yourself.
These are signs of unresolved trauma. If you can relate to some of these feelings, you could be experiencing PTSD.

Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Symptoms of PTSD fall into four major categories: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions. However, these PTSD symptoms may look different depending on your unique personality, support system, and traumatic experience. You can read a little more about each category of PTSD symptom below.

PTSD is actually one of the top reasons people seek out therapy services, and the therapists at Brittani Persha Counseling are experts in this area. Our Houston counseling clinic specializes in trauma treatment and it’s one of the most common reasons people call us. Whether a single event or a long-term stressor has impacted your life, PTSD treatment is known to be effective. At BPC, we have therapists who are trained in evidence-based trauma therapies including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Pia Melody’s Family of Origin/Relational Trauma.
When you book an initial appointment with a trauma counselor at Brittani Persha Counseling office, we will take a closer look at your symptoms. After your therapist completes a full intake assessment, we will talk about whether or not your symptoms qualify for a PTSD diagnosis and how to help you move forward. Regardless of whether you technically meet the criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, we can help you learn to cope with any unresolved trauma.
What Does Trauma Therapy and PTSD Treatment Look Like?
PTSD treatment begins with building a relationship with your therapist and establishing a trusting and safe environment. In addition to providing a supportive environment, we will first begin to work to ease your PTSD symptoms. This can include grounding techniques, new coping tools, mindfulness, improving sleep, and addressing any nightmares. By acquiring these positive coping skills, you can learn to manage and respond to stress in a more healthy way. In a way that might be unique for you, we also incorporate a mind-body awareness approach that can help you develop the ability to listen to your body. This increased understanding of your body can help you understand what is a real threat and what is past trauma.
Overtime as your anxiety calms down- you will feel more confident that you can get through the challenges life brings. As a result, you will feel able to handle stress and live your life with more peace.
Then…. the deeper work begins. The type of trauma treatment approach will depend on what your therapist sees as most effective in meeting your individual needs. You can expect this part of the process to be difficult and there will be moments where therapy is not fun. However, you can also count on your therapist to be empathetic and caring. Your therapist will be with you every step of the way. Counseling doesn’t have to take years. In fact, our clients often feel significantly better after just a couple of months. We want to help you find healing as quickly as possible. This is why we use trauma treatments that are proven to work.
It may be impossible to erase the traumatic experiences from your past, but it is very possible for you to find healing and emotional peace.
We are dedicated to helping you recover from the traumas of your past and move forward toward a brighter future.
What Is EMDR Therapy And Why Is It Our Often Recommended Treatment Method For Trauma?
One of the most powerful and well-researched therapies used to treat trauma and its lasting effects is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – also known as EMDR. EMDR dramatically reduces PTSD symptoms and often in ways that transitional therapy methods do not. You may have heard that severe emotional pain (trauma memories, anxiety, depression, etc) requires a long time to heal. This is a common belief people have about PTSD, and it’s true that we haven’t always had treatment approaches like EMDR.
However, research suggests that EMDR therapy may be able to soothe the aftereffects of an unexpected tragedy, witnessing a violent act, traumatic changes in one’s life, and persistent anxiety in much less time than the other trauma treatment modalities.
a single Traumatic Event Vs. Complex Trauma
At BPC, we understand that dealing with the aftermath of a traumatic experience can be difficult. This is true, whether you are dealing with a traumatic event or more complex trauma. A single traumatic event can be a car crash, a natural disaster, the death of a loved one, rape, etc. Complex trauma is an accumulation of trauma within the context of family or other intimate relationships that happen repetitively over time. Some examples of complex trauma are family dysfunction, neglect, abandonment, child abuse, bonding issues, domestic violence, or prolonged stress. Complex trauma can be harder to identify, but both can affect you in similar ways.
You might believe that through Trauma Therapy and PTSD treatment you can indeed find healing in your mind, emotions, and body, but still have some questions and concerns…
