Therapy for Anxiety

The intensity of everyday life builds. Chores to complete, bills to pay, deadlines to make. Pushing through your feelings of discomfort and worry may feel like the only option in a world that never stops. Overtime, the exhaustion of suppressing anxiety begins to feel as demanding as your full-time job.

I feel anxious, but do I need to talk to someone?

In life’s difficult moments, the last thing you need to feel is alone. At BPC, we want to normalize the value in seeking anxiety treatment for anyone experiencing symptoms like:

  • General anxiety
  • Excessive worry
  • Specific fears/phobias
  • Social anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Somatic Symptoms (headache, nausea, etc.)
  • Indecisiveness
  • Irritability

Think of symptoms as signals. When you feel thirsty, you drink water. When you cannot see, you wear glasses. When you feel anxious…It’s not as straight forward. We are not always equipped to single-handedly meet the need of this signal. Trying to control anxious thoughts alone often feels like a dead end.

If experiencing anxiety inhibits your enjoyment of life’s pleasures or throws extra hurdles into your already busy routine, counseling can help.

Our Approach to Anxiety Therapy

When you experience anxiety, you are, on a conscious or unconscious level, dealing with the body’s natural response to feeling unsafe. Your body’s survival instincts trigger the sympathetic nervous system’s fight or flight response.

At Brittani Persha Counseling, we take a science-backed, bottom-up approach to helping our clients who struggle with their mental health. What do we mean by bottom-up?

Taking research from psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Bruce Perry, therapists at Brittani Persha Counseling understand that changing anxious thought patterns begins with a strong foundation for regulating the nervous system. The “bottom” parts of the brain, including the brainstem and midbrain, are like first responders in an emergency. Your counselor at BPC will work with you on strategies to regulate and calm the arousal you experience when these “first responders” fire off more than desired or needed.

 Commonly used interventions might include:

Additionally, counselors at BPC incorporate various evidence-based talk therapy modalities into treatment including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, attachment therapy, and more.

The Anxiety Therapy Process at Brittani Persha Counseling

The counseling process in general is a journey you and your therapist go on together in order to promote wellness and functionality in life. This process involves empathy, unconditional positive regard, and a safe space to be met exactly where you are while challenging the fears and worries that you may be struggling with. It is important to note that the therapy process is fluid and will be individualized to meet your unique needs and goals.

The first step in beginning anxiety therapy at Brittani Persha Counseling is to schedule a FREE 20-minute phone consultation with our Client Relations Specialist. During this call, our CRS will discuss what is bringing you to therapy, availability, billing, and any questions you may have about our office or our therapy process.

During the intake session, your therapist will gather more information on what is bringing you to therapy and you will spend some time building rapport with each other.

During weeks 2-4, you and your therapist will set goals for treatment and make plans to work towards them. Your therapist may conduct paper or oral assessments to get a better understanding of your presenting problem. During this time, your therapist will also provide you with a diagnosis (if needed for insurance or school purposes)

During this time, you will meet with your therapist on a weekly or biweekly basis to work on the goals you have set.

The last one to two sessions will be focused on building closure after treatment goals have been met. We will review the goals set at the beginning of treatment with you and discuss progress that has been made, skills learned, and plans moving forward.
