I have referred several families and students for a variety of different situations requiring compassionate counseling and this practice is ALWAYS my first recommendation. All the families I’ve referred have been extremely gracious about how wonderful this practice is and they in turn have referred this practice to those they know too! Grateful to have Brittani Persha counseling in the West Houston area!

A Note to Parents

If you’re here, you may be feeling worried about your child.
Maybe you’ve noticed changes in their behavior, mood, or school performance. Or maybe you simply sense that something isn’t quite right.
Seeking support does not mean you’ve failed as a parent — it means you care deeply about your child’s well-being.
Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re feeling. With the right guidance and a safe space, they can learn to understand their emotions, express them in healthy ways, and build stronger coping skills.
At Brittani Persha Counseling we’re here to support your child — and you — every step of the way.

Who Can Benefit From Child Therapy?

Children often express emotional pain in ways that don’t always look like “sadness.” Therapy can help when your child may be experiencing:

  • Autism spectrum–related challenges
  • Behavioral challenges, anger issues, or emotional outbursts
  • Trauma, PTSD, or experiences of abuse (including physical, sexual, or domestic abuse)

How Our Child Therapists Help

Children communicate differently than adults. Sometimes they don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling — but they can show us through play, art, and interaction. At Brittani Persha Counseling we use evidence-based, age-appropriate therapeutic techniques, carefully tailored to your child’s personality and needs, including:

  • Play Therapy – Helping children express emotions through play.
  • Art Therapy – Using creative activities to communicate feelings.
  • Sandtray Therapy – Helping children express emotions using miniatures and sand.
  • Theraplay – Therapeutic play that builds stronger parent-child connections
  • EMDR & Play Therapy – Helping the brain heal from trauma in a safe, guided way.
  • Dialectical Behavioral Play Therapy (DBT) – Teaching children healthy coping skills through guided play.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Teaching how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected.
  • Emotion Regulation Skills – Building tools to manage stress, anger, and frustration.
  • Social Skills Development – Supporting healthy communication and peer relationships.
  • Family Collaboration – Involving parents or caregivers to reinforce progress at home.

Our Child Counseling Process

We follow the BPC Child Counseling Process, thoughtfully developed through years of working with children and families. This structure ensures your child feels safe, understood, and supported — while you remain actively involved in their progress.

Purpose: To gather information, define the counseling relationship, and set treatment goals.

  • You and the clinician meet without the child present.
  • The therapist collects relevant background information, including family, biological, psychological, and social history.
  • Informed consent and the counseling relationship are discussed.
  • Goals for therapy are collaboratively identified.

Note: Administrative and intake work is completed before your child’s sessions begin.

Purpose: To build rapport with your child and assess emotional and behavioral needs.

  • Your child participates in play therapy with their assigned therapist.
  • The therapist observes and formulates an assessment.
  • Parents may participate in portions of sessions as needed.

Purpose: To begin structured therapy and support emotional healing.

  • Assessment results and the treatment plan are reviewed with parents.
  • Play therapy allows children to process emotions like anger, fear, sadness, or frustration in a safe environment.
  • Therapy may include:
    • Play therapy
    • Art therapy
    • Sandtray therapy
    • Parent-child interaction therapy
    • Family therapy
    • Coping skills development
  • The therapist identifies and addresses patterns of thinking and behavior contributing to emotional difficulties.
  • Early recognition and intervention in negative cycles are emphasized.
  • As progress is made, children will better express emotions, communicate needs, and cope with overwhelming feelings.
  • Sessions may gradually reduce in frequency as goals are met.

Purpose: To support parents in guiding their child’s progress.

  • Review treatment updates
  • Discuss progress at home
  • Receive guidance for handling challenges

Purpose: To ensure goals are met and plan for ongoing support.

  • Most treatment lasts 6 months to 1 year, depending on the child.
  • Final sessions review goals and progress.
  • A post-therapy plan is outlined to ensure continued success.
  • Parents are guided to confidently apply what has been learned.

FAQ – CHILD THERAPY IN HOUSTON

The best therapy for children depends on various factors, including the child’s age, specific needs, and the nature of their challenges or concerns. At Brittani Persha Counseling we offer different therapeutic approaches which may be more suitable for different children and situations.

During your initial intake with your child’s therapist, you will discuss the different therapy options that are available based off your presenting concerns, goals, and child’s age.

Yes! Therapy is a good resource for adults and children, alike! Therapy provides a safe and supportive environment for children to express their thoughts and feelings, learn coping skills, and develop healthy ways of managing stress and adversity.

Therapy ranges in cost depending on a variety of factors including location, insurance, therapist experience and additional training, and more. At Brittani Persha Counseling, our rates range from $140-$160 per session, depending on the therapist.

At Brittani Persha Counseling, we typically recommend that, if both parent and child are in therapy services, they see different therapists. This allows for each person to have a safe, unbiased space to process their thoughts and emotions.

The first step to beginning therapy for your child at Brittani Persha Counseling is to schedule a therapy consultation. This consultation is 15-20 minutes with our Client Relations Specialist to answer any questions you may have and to get you scheduled for your child’s initial intake session with a therapist in our office.

We have a whole blog post on this topic! In short, telling kids about play therapy can be approached with care and honesty, focusing on reassuring them and providing clear explanations in a language they understand. It’s essential to frame it positively, emphasizing things such such as getting to meet with a special safe person, learning new skills, and BONUS….. TOYS!

At Brittani Persha Counseling, we have a responsibility to “do no harm” and only recommend a level of therapy that is “clinically necessary”. Therapy on a weekly basis is not bad for kids, contrary it is very beneficial for a wide variety of circumstances.

Forcing a child to go to therapy can have negative consequences and may not be effective in addressing the underlying issues. However, it is common that children may be nervous for their first visit – please refer to our blog about telling children about therapy to help address any first visit jitters!

If emotional or behavioral changes last several weeks, interfere with school or friendships, or cause distress for your child or family, therapy can help.

We provide therapy for children, preteens, and teens, using developmentally appropriate approaches for each age.

Yes. Parent involvement is an important part of successful child therapy, and regular parent sessions are included.

Many children attend therapy for 6–12 months, though length varies based on goals and progress.

We are located in West Houston, convenient to Memorial, Energy Corridor, Katy, and ZIP codes 77077 and 77079.
